Accomplishments and Priorities
As a member of Common Council, the Finance Committee
and the Public Works Commission, working with
the Mayor, fellow committee members, and city staff
I have been a key part of many important accomplishments
in the last 2 years:
- Secured a $500,000 grant to repair the shoreline of the Rock River downtown
- Kept the Public Works Facility in the 7th District
- Successfully pushed to make the new Public Works Facility smaller and simpler in design. Originally budgeted at over $7 million, the final cost is under $6 million.
- Worked to secure the $13 million investment in Watertown Square
- Strengthened downtown through keeping Pick N Save in the city center as part of the new Watertown Square re-development project
- Put the city in the driver's seat for developing the riverfront downtown by purchasing the empty land along Water St.
- Worked with qualified developers to secure state support of the new senior housing project along the riverfront
- Added $100,000 additional funds for repaving streets for 2009
- Found a way to keep the indoor pool open and complete the necessary repairs without having to raise taxes
- Increased used of competitive bidding for city contracts, saving vital tax dollars
- Created a multi-year plan for street improvements, emphasizing re-paving over complete re-construction
- Relieved some of the flooding issues along Welsh Road through the building of retention ponds in front of Farm and Fleet
Over the next two years, I will continue to pursue the priorities of
- Creating jobs
- Increasing the tax base, keeping taxes lower for everyone
- Cutting costs
- Re-building our crumbling streets and infrastructure
